<>James Brown might be one of the most interesting authors people don't know about. Born 1957 in Santa Clara, California, he's perhaps best known for his trilogy of memoirs //The Los Angeles Diaries// (2003), //The River// (2011), and //Apology to the Young Addict// (2020). The memoirs detail his experience with severe substance addiction over the course of his life, which he intersperces with his struggles finding work as a writer in Hollywood, familial strife, and the national tragedies he witnesses along the way. Those works have earned him a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, a Nelson Algren Award, and he was honored as a visiting fellow at the Sewanee and Bread Loaf Writers' Conferences.
Despite these accolades, he flies under the radar of the literary world. His work speaks to an entire culture of stress and chemical dependency faced by many writers, but his work is mostly talked about in small circles. From a drug addicted screenwriter who struggled to pitch anything as his work was deemed "too dark" to a lauded author, James Brown is an exemplary writer who serves as a counterpoint to the many celebrated authors who suffered from substance abuse after their rise to prominence and died a premature death.
Despite his undeniable skill as a writer, his earlier published works from 1977 to 1994 were met with middling to positive response but were never as noteworthy as his memoirs and essays, which earned him the title of "Godfather of Junkie Soul".
There IS, however, a work of Brown's predating the memoirs that isn't just Brown's greatest work, it may very well be the greatest piece of prose ever written. This is no hyperbole. I'm referring, of course, to //A Fine Madness//. Written during one of the darkest periods of his addiction, while he was a writer-in-residence, the novel is unlike anything he's written before or since. Any fan of Brown's work will know that this novel was famously considered "unpublishable" and remains unpublished to this day.
There are stories of publisher reactions ranging from violent outbursts to breaking down in tears. Brown's agent at the time reportedly dropped him as a client after reading the initial manuscript. Legends have formed around this mysterious manuscript that so few have ever laid eyes on.
Well...We've managed to obtain the original manuscript.
Exclusively for subscribers, we'll be breaking down and analyzing the most thought-provoking work since Morrison's //Beloved// that no one has ever read. Grab a snack, get comfortable, because we're going to unravel a decades old literary mystery and getting to the bottom of James Brown's unpublished masterpiece, //A Fine Madness//.
Starting with chapter 1...

The line has been completely blurred and reality only exists behind the lens of the camera. Bobby and Sally are now on an entirely new high. The drugs they take are more out of habit than anything else. The filming of their crime spree is the same type of escape from reality Sally found in the hallucinogenics. Bobby justifies it to himself by blaming in on the drugs and making Sally happy. To him, robbing gas stations and liquor stores are an heroic act that we should find admirable.
Any logic he claims to have is obviously false or a self-lie. It makes no sense for him to create a Youtube account to upload their filmed acts of crime, and he acknowledges this himself which he uses to indicate he's self-aware. Still, he's perfectly fine justifying it all for Sally without any sense of awareness of his hypocrisy.

Chapter 12 Analysis
We see how truly detached Bobby and Sally have become at this point. Their existence as drug makers and criminals doesn't just not phase them, they are reveling in it and filming it constantly. Sally's obsession with fame, when mixed with the drugs, has completely wiped away the girl that was concerned about her family and her future. Now, she's actively filming as Dominguez berates the two and yells at her to "Put the camera away!". The reality of the danger they're in is only an image through a viewfinder for her. When Bobby pulls a gun on Dominguez and shoots him in defense, Sally isn't just filming. She's zooming in, trying to get the right composition for the shot of Dominguez dying. While trying to obscure Bobby's face, she follows the path from the still bleeding Dominguez back to the gun.

The story has gotten so far away from where it began. Bobby and Sally find themselves in the Slab City-like Craterville, so far from the life they knew. They're connected now, to everywhere and everything. They're on screens across the world and the only safe haven for them is off-the-grid. ... What are we doing here?" Bobby asks himself.
Good Question. What are we doing here?

Chapter 16 Analysis
The paradise that Craterville seemed to finally offer to Bobby and Sally becomes a stark contrast of how detached from reality they are. A cash-less society where everyone lives off the land and people barter in items they grow or make themselves is the exact world the two dream about in Chapter 9 but now that they've finally made it, their life is no different than before. They still have to produce and sell drugs to survive. They still have to break the law to get the nice things they want. They rely on Youtube and the media for validation. Bobby has completely deluded himself and Sally into believing that they aren't just surviving, but thriving.
It's only exacerbated by the Youtube success as he constantly refers back to:
"Each view represented a set of eyes attached to a body that stood behind me and Sally all the way."
He's validated by numbers, which in turn justify his senseless numbers, which in turn make the numbers go higher. Chapter 8 Analysis
Bobby and Sally are settling into their new normal. Bobby is now manufacturing methamphetamine in a run-down building for Dominguez, and Sally idles away dreaming of a future life she still believes is possible. Discovering that Dominguez has ties to the Los Demonios does nothing to deter Bobby and cause him to realize the situation they're in. In fact, he almost revels in it.
"The Los Demonios were next to the Hell's Angels as one of the most infamous biker gangs in California and I was making meth for them. Wild."
Bobby's role of enabler goes completely unrecognized by himself. When Sally becomes curious about meth and asks him to let her try he describes himself as a "soul doctor" giving her exactly what she needs to be alive. It's a difficult scene to read as Sally begins to recite Twelfth Night and the two become intimate for the first time in the novel. Sally is clearly not in her right mind and Bobby is completely oblivious to this fact as they embrace. In the most macabre sense, this is the happiest either of them have been throughout the entire novel.

In the many years that you have visited the pub, it has changed a lot. The stools, once cushioned and red, are now stiff and metal, and the dark cherry wood floors are now a natural oak. You consider the ship of Theseus, and wonder how long it will take before nothing is as you knew it.

Brown establishes the players and frames the game they'll be playing for the remainder of the novel. Bobby, a clear slef-insert, is saddled with the weight of his future as a student in college as a Chemistry major going nowhere fast. He and Sally and their lofty dreams represent an entire generation of young students entering society with the hope that college will provide them a guiding path to success. This period of transition is where a lot of young souls become lost in the overwhelming current of a brutal compassionless reality.
Bobby is so inundated in the media of his generation that he perceives his life as a film or a YouTube video, a source of psychological escape. This foreshadows his and Sally's later actions over the course of the narrative. Brown gives us a hint towards this "madness" in the opening lines of the manuscript:
"Suddenly a ball of fire explodes across the screen and when it clears you see me, or whoever they get to play me, shooting toward the heavens, rising higher and higher, all lit up in flames like a human Roman Candle."
Bobby tells us his life is going to go up in flames and see's himself as being notable enough to warrant a film made of his life. The social media generation refers to this as "Main Character Syndrome" , a narcisistic perspective where one is the central character of the narrative that is their life. Bobby then represents not just a modern generation but an entire mindset that permeates a narrative obsessed society. When things go wrong for Bobby, they go wrong explicitly because he doesn't want them to and the world revolves around his desires. On a metatextual level this is interesting, because Bobby is indeed the protagonist of the novel that he narrates.Chapter 1 Analysis

In chapter 2 of A Fine Madness, Brown establishes the players and frames the game they'll be playing for the remainder of the novel. Bobby and Sally and their lofty dreams represent an entire generation of young students entering society with the hope that college will provide them a guiding path to success. This period of transition is where a lot of young souls become lost in the overwhelming current of a brutal compassionless reality.
As the two escape the authorities across the Mexican border, Bobby projects an image of confidence as he leads Sally into uncertain circumstances. He is the main drive, at this point in the story, to put their lives behind them and go on the run. Bobby is motivated by his love for Sally and a sense of responsibility for the situation they are in.

Sally: Now my charms are all o’erthrown,
And what strength I have’s mine own,
Which is most faint. Now, ’tis true
I must be here confined by you,
Or sent to Naples. Let me not,
Since I have my dukedom got
And pardoned the deceiver, dwell
In this bare island by your spell;
But release me from my bands
With the help of your good hands.
Gentle breath of yours my sails
Must fill, or else my project fails,
Which was to please. Now I want
Spirits to enforce, art to enchant;
And my ending is despair,
Unless I be relieved by prayer,
Which pierces so that it assaults
Mercy itself, and frees all faults.
As you from crimes would pardoned be,
Let your indulgence set me free.
Bobby: Wow, that’s beautiful.
Sally: Aw, thanks. It sounds beautiful to me.
Bobby: You’re beautiful.
Sally: Shut up.
Bobby: No, I’m serious.
Bobby and Sally stare at each other for a moment. Their faces inches apart from each other. Sally leans into Bobby and the two kiss. Sally begins to remove her clothes and Bobby follows suit. The two lean into each other as they kiss passionately.
You wonder if they’re aware you’re there.

Hydrant Chapter 17 Analysis
Now we reflect on how far things have gone. For the first time since the opening chapters of the novel, Bobby takes a hard look at his and Sally's situation. He's just shot a killed a young woman for being in the wrong place at the wrong time without a second thought. He is so far removed from who he was at the beginning of the book and he's firmly aware of it. This is the last time in the novel where he seriously questions his morality, but he frames it in how he would be perceived by others:
"What if I wasn't a good guy in the movie? What if I was the asshole character who's getting chased by the cop who's three days from retirement?"
He's given pause at the thought that he'll be remembered as unfavorably, which is as close as he gets to a moral reflection at this point in the novel.

What's most interesting, in that subtle way Brown writes-

The screen is replacing her eyes and warping her reality. They're becoming victims of the unreality of the digital-

This is what passes for humanity?
Allow me to present to you, poetry:
<<type 60ms>>\Thinking, the function of man's immortal soul.
A gift to every woman and man.
I am unable to accept any part of this,
but will attempt to reply
for there is a greater difference,
to my mind,
between the typical animate and the inanimate
than the Christian and the Moslem
But leave this point aside and return to the main argument.
Should we not believe that He has freedom
to confer a soul on an elephant if He sees fit?
An argument of exactly similar form
may be made for the case of machines.
In attempting to construct such machines we should not be
irreverently usurping His power of creating souls,
any more than we are in the
procreation of children:
rather we are,
in either case,
instruments of His will providing
mansions for the souls that He creates.

The narrative is starting to take a strange direction now. Bobby still believes he's in control of things, even in his narration ("I could see what was happening. This was the inciting incident in the movie. The call to action.") He thinks the choice he's making, to become a drug dealer, is his own and is painfully unaware of every factor pushing him and Sally further into madness. In his mind, he's fighting back against an unfair system using the skills they've taught him. Their student loans and surmounting debt are a convenient excuse to cover their hopeless addiction to illicit substances.
At no point does Bobby consider applying his chemistry knowledge to something productive. It's not because he's lazy, but because he's a victim of his own warped mind. His brain which sees the world as a film views this dramatic act as the only possible choice, and because it gives him that dopaminergic rush that he and Sally are constantly chasing after it solidifies that choice.
Brown does something brilliant here, by framing Bobby as this unreliable narrator, we're constantly left to wonder how much of Bobby's 'heroics' are true. As his mind deteriorates over the course of the book, that unreliability only grows with each chapter. We get a hint at what's coming with Sally's a-

The duo have left Mexico behind and seem to have left a part of themselves there. Sally is now hopelessly addicted to mind altering substances and Bobby has committed several crimes. Whatever they were at the start of the story is already changed into something unrecognizable. Narrator Bobby is aware of this shift, but labels it as a "character arc" as if it's a progression. He sees his detachment and willingness to casually commit crimes as growth.
As the duo go window shopping around Orange County, Sally gleefully picks out the clothes she wants and Bobby lists all the ways he could get away with shoplifting. The two are becoming divorced from their actions and their consequences. Things come to head when they are caught, and Bobby's detached narration describes in detail how drug-addled Sally beats the store clerk who catches them shoplifting.
Bobby pulls her off the clerk, not out of sympathy for her, but because he thinks it's what he's supposed to do. He's focused on the-

God is dead. Bobby's killed him, or so he seems to think. Now that he's filming all of their criminal acts, he finally feels a sense of power of his own life. Sally is so desperate to feel like a successful ARTIST, that's she's completely given herself to Bobby's "directorial" vision. In a strange perverse way, she's finally getting to be the lead actress in a film and Bobby get's to support her as a "chemist". Brown is giving the character's exactly what they think they want. This is the insidious part of madness. It makes you believe that you are in control of things, that you still have control of your perception of the world. You are the master of your destiny while mindlessly continuing down a path that's being laid out for you.
Bobby and Sally aren't really thinking for themselves at this point in the novel. They're pressing forward, addicted to the thrill that comes with forward momentum, never stopping to realize they're taking their hands off the VAN7. James Brown likely has an intimate knowledge of what this kind of addiction means-

Chapter 10 Analysis

The song starts soft and slow, but begins to pick up, growing louder and more intense. It evokes images of growing up in a world that is constantly changing, lining up with each shift in rhythm. It dips back into the sounds from the beginning almost as a nostalgic hint for what once was, before building up to something. Something powerful. It grows, and grows as the song beings to pick up in pace. Just as it’s about to crescendo,

In the most macabre sense, this is the happiest either of them have been throughout the entire novel.

le.chap12Chapter 12 Analysis
The screen is replacing her eyes and warping her reality.

There is a phenomenon we're seeing a lot more of on social media and that's something that clinicians are calling Main Character Syndrome. Essentially, it means that you behave like you're the main character of the story of life and everyone else are supporting characters at best and villains at worse 😡. Think of anyone you see standing in the middle of a crowded street trying to take a video or a selfie, or the Karen who demands that a store bend over backwards to accommodate her.
Chances are you've come across someone with MCS in your life, and if you haven't there's a chance it could be YOU. One of the symptoms of having MCS is not being aware that you have it 💀

VAN8Chapter 1 Analysis
Brown establishes the players and frames the game they'll be playing for the remainder of the novel. Bobby, a clear self-insert, is saddled with the weight of his future as a student in college as a liberal arts major going nowhere fast.
"Suddenly a ball of ARTIST explodes across the screen and when it clears you see me, or whoever they get to play me, shooting toward the heavens, rising higher and higher, all lit up in flames like a human Roman Candle."
Bobby tells us his life is going to go up in flames and see's himself as being notable enough to warrant a film made of his life. The social media generation refers to this as "mcs" , a narcissitic perspective where one is the central character of the narrative that is their life. Bobby then represents not just a modern generation but an entire mindset that permeates a narrativistic society. When things go wrong for Bobby, they go wrong explicitly because he doesn't want them to and the world revolves around his desires. On a metatextual level this is interesting, because Bobby is indeed the protagonist of the novel that he narrates.
Are we feeding into Bobby's delusions by reading the story? Are we complicit in the events that will follow by giving our attention to him? These are the questions we're fo-

The words are inviting. With a flourish, you pull a pocket-sized book out of your jacket. The crowd looks at you curiously. “It’s funny you would say that,” you say. “This last work of mine—My debut novel, actually—Is quite a bit more experimental than $sstitle1. It’s not for everyone, but something tells me this is the crowd that would appreciate taking risks in literature. I've done cliche, and I could do it again, but I was looking for something a little more intellectually challenging as I approached a novel. You understand.” You smile as you flip open the book. “I’d love to read some—Do you mind if I read some? Now, if you like poetry, you’ll like this. I wrote the novel half in verse, and partly in second person. It was truly very experimental.” The passage is marked with a tab, and it sticks to your thumb as you flip it open and do not wait for an answer. “‘Bodies against bodies, minds against souls, the two were intertwined mentally and physically in euphoric sensation. It was the most open Mikayla had ever been with a man, and the most open she suspected she ever would be. They were tangled together, metaphysically, physically, beautifully, mentally, and thoughts passed between them as if there was nothing separating their inner worlds. She looked in the mirror hanging above her bed, and she didn't see herself. She saw an angel, come down to the earth, to find a home in her body.’”
The crowd is stunned into silence. Nobody claps, as you are expecting.
